Modern Linux distros are designed to appeal to a large number of users who run modern hardware. As a result, they have become too bloated for older machines, even if you manually delete files.
Without a healthy dollop of system memory and an extra core or two, these distros may not deliver the best performance. Thankfully, there are many lightweight distros, trimmed and tweaked by expert hands, which can be used to breathe new life into older hardware. But there's one caveat to bear in mind when working with lightweight distros — they usually manage to support ancient kit by cutting away just about everything you take for granted, such as wizards and scripts which make everyday tasks easier.
That said, these lightweight distros are fully capable of reviving older hardware and can even function as a replacement of your current operating system, if you're willing to adjust to their way of working and install extra programs as necessary.
Absolute Linux is a lightweight distro designed for desktop use, and as such comes preinstalled with the Firefox browser and LibreOffice suite. It's based on Slackware New versions of Absolute Linux are released roughly once a year. The most recent version The OS is still in the beta testing stage so may perform a little unpredictably, as ever with beta software.
Whichever version you choose, there's a massive selection of lightweight applications available. The installer is text-based so there's no Live mode, but nevertheless it's incredibly simple to follow. The way Absolute is structured also means that you can add and remove packages from the install media to create a distro which truly suits you, though you'll need some time and experience with Linux if you really want to make the most of this feature. Once installed, Absolute Linux is incredibly nimble.
This is ensured through the lightweight IceWM window manager, along with popular apps such as LibreOffice, making this OS perfect for older machines. There's also plenty of documentation accessible from within the desktop itself to assist new users. The Core Project offers up the tiniest of Linux distros, shipping three variants on which you can build your own environments. The lightest edition is Core, weighing in at just 11MB, which comes without a graphical desktop — but you can always add one after installation.
If that's too intimidating, try TinyCore currently v9. You can also choose to install CorePlus, which measures a relatively hefty MB. TinyCore saves on size by requiring a wired network connection during initial setup.Tl494 inverter with feedback
This minimalist distro doesn't feature many apps. After installation there's little beyond the Terminal, a basic text editor and a network connection manager. The Control Panel provides quick access to the different configurable parts of the distro such as display, mouse, network, etc. Use the graphical package manager 'Apps' to install additional software such as multimedia codecs. The 'L' in Lubuntu stands for lightweight, and it unashamedly appeals to those Ubuntu users who are looking for an OS which requires fewer resources than most modern distros, but doesn't force you to compromise on your favourite apps.
Lubuntu is primarily designed for older machines. The default desktop is based on LXQt, which is far less resource hungry than mainstream Ubuntu's Gnome 3 desktop. It comes with a plethora of office, internet, multimedia and graphics apps, along with a wide assortment of useful tools and utilities.Hive OS 2.French bulldog puppies for sale in gainesville fl
Although the changes are mostly on the web-based front end, so the Linux OS on the rig is not going to need to be necessarily changed initially, although updates with new features to that will probably follow as well.
All user accounts are going to be migrated automatically, in fact you can use your existing Hive OS account to login in the Hive OS 2. Migration will happen in a couple of days, though no exact date has been announced yet. If you want to move a mining rig to the Hive OS 2.
There are a number of Linux-based mining distributions available out there, but most of them do have some limitation or a drawback or maybe are not very user friendly for non-advanced users. Hive OS is a relatively new Linux based mining platform that is trying to change that and offer a single package for all your GPU and even Bitmain ASIC miners for easy deployment, monitoring and control. The installation of the OS on any AMD or Nvidia GPU mining rig is quick and easy and then you take control from the cloud via a convenient web-based user interface, so no need to remotely login to each system and manage it or monitor it this way.
The Hive OS comes with most popular miners for AMD and Nvidia GPUs for many algorithms and they are maintained, though you can add miners yourself as well without the need to compile them yourself from source.Salone del libro: quali sono i criteri di pagamento dei creditori
The mining platform is ideal for people with more than just a few mining rigs or ASIC miners as it allows you to easily monitor their operation and control them if needed including overclocking or underclocking to optimize them for efficiency or performance. The good thing is that you can register and try it for free and if it works for your needs and covers your requirements you can then start deploying it on a large mining farm for example.
Do note that there are different clients available for Linux GPU mining rigs, ASIC miners and now there is also even a beta version available for Windows, so you may want to try that as well. It is a full featured operating system intended for mining, unlike the Hive OS clients for ASICs or for Windows that do need the host operating system already installed and work on top of it.
This is an interesting project under development — a Linux-based operating system intended for miners of Ethereum or Ethereum ETC plus SiaCoin SC dual mining that comes with a centralized web-based monitoring and control dashboard. For the moment SimpleMining Easy OS does need at least an 8GB drive could be used from a USB stick and you only need to set your email in the configuration that you are going to be using to login on the website for monitoring and control of the mining rig.
There are some security concerns regarding the access from web and the login with only email address though, so you might want to be careful what email address you use.
How To Choose The Best Linux Distro For Your Needs
Home Contact us. Search for:. Read More No Comments. Read More 6 Comments. Read More 2 Comments.Linux is traditionally associated as being an operating system for coders and programmers, but over the years there have been real attempts to make Linux more attractive to general consumers.
This is not least due to general consumer dissatisfaction with Windows security issues or even Apple's walled garden. However, Linux comes in many different forms, known as 'flavors' or 'distros'.
This is simply because Linux is so incredibly configurable that different forms tend to be developed for different userbase needs or interests. For example, as mentioned, some have moved toward trying to entice disgruntled Windows users into something more familiar. However, others remain focused on specific environments that may favor programming or scientific applications, or other concerns such as security, resource use, and similar.
Best OS for mining?
Different Linux distros can all work with Linux software and applications, and of course, any cloud-based apps that run through a browser. However, Linux distros come with a variety of different ranges of bundled software.
Some might come with a lot of basic applications already pre-installed, while others will have the barest minimum. And, as mentioned, Linux is very customizable, far beyond what normal Windows or Mac users may be used to. Users can commonly configure everything from their desktop to security and privacy settings.
Altogether, this is why it helps to have a good idea of what different Linux distros can offer. Do you need a GUI more familiar to Windows? Are you more concerned about privacy? How comfortable are you with typing commands rather than clicking icons? All these concerns may determine which Linux distro is best for you, and here we aim to help you with that decision.

The very best Linux distros are tailored to specific types of users. Arch Linux on the other hand appeals to experienced users who can take advantage of using the Terminal to type commands to perform tasks such as installing apps. This guide focuses on picking out the very best distros overall. The latest version of Elementary OS is called Loki, which as well as being that bit prettier and neater than its predecessor Freya, has its own application installer UI called AppCenter.
You may need to add more programs, but this is easy to do using the integrated AppCenter, which contains paid programs designed specifically for the OS such as Quilter for budding writers or Spice-Up for composing presentations. It also has better support for proprietary media formats, allowing you to play videos, DVDs and MP3 music files out of the box.msOS - Setting up Linux mining OS
You can download three main starter flavours of Mint 19, each of which uses a different desktop environment, the top-most layer of the interface allowing you to change elements such as the appearance of windows and menus. Linux Mint Unfortunately, this is no longer available with Linux Mint 19, but it can still be installed on top of version 19 if you miss it.
While Timeshift was introduced in version Timeshift enables users to restore their computer from the last functional snapshot. All these desktop environments offer a good deal of customisation options, so feel free to download a few and boot as Live CD prior to installing to see which works best. The main aim of Arch Linux is to keep things simple, not so much for users as much as ensure code is clean and correct, with a minimalist approach to everything.
There's not so much bundled with it as other distros, so users will be expected to download any additional software they need, as well as customize Arch Linux according to their needs. While it may make the distro a little complicated, the lack of bloat can make it especially attractive to users who want a clean Linux experience with little or no clutter. The result is a Linux experience that definitely favors more experienced users rather than beginners, so keep that in mind.Trying to get into mining cryptocurrency on the Linux platform and unsure where to start?
